So I went to a lunch/bridal shower today for a coworker who's getting married in about two weeks. First of all, the couple sickens me. They are so frickin beautiful it's ridiculous. My coworker is like 5'10" and model skinny and model beautiful and her bf is blond, gorgeous and to top it off has this crazy WASPy American name. At our department cookout a couple weeks ago they were playing croquet (I don't know who brought it) and they looked like they were right out of a J.Crew ad, no, Ralph Lauren. Barf.
Second of all, I'm really getting sick of all this single-spotlight bullshit. We were there not twenty minutes when our director starts with "Ok, who's going to be next? You're single, you, you, etc." I wanted to crawl under the table and die.
My 40 yr old single coworker was sitting next to me telling my about her bad blind date from Sunday, which provoked the guy sitting next to me (about my age) to ask me if I had a bf. I said no. He went on to tell me he just broke up with his gf, but met someone new on match. "You should try it." "Yeah, I did." I replied. "Oh." He said with a look of such pity that I wanted to run out of the restuarant screaming.

I don't know the couple and your description of them just makes me hate them.
I've gotten really good at avoiding the whole, "Do you have a boyfriend?" question...though, sometimes, I'm tempted to say something like, "Not anymore -- he passed away" just to make people uncomfortable.
People would probably be more understanding and supportive in that event, anyway.
a few ex-bosses and ex-coworkers always used to ask me if i was bringing anyone to a work function. of 'coz i didn't have a plus one. heck i wasn't even dating anyone. and i can imagine if i brought a guy to a work function... they'd all be staring him up and down haha!
